Racing for Rock the Park

That’s the proverb these days for Brian Grubbs, pastor of Louisville Church of Christ.

Grubbs is the organizer of a 5K run set for Saturday morning Aug. 29 at Metzger Park in Louisville. The event is a fund-raiser for Rock the Park 2015, the Christian rock concert that will take place Sunday evening Sept. 13 at Metzger Park.

Since the 5K run precedes the concert, one must run before one rocks, especially if one is concerned about supporting Rock the Park 2015 because costs have never been higher in the five years of Rock the Park’s existence.

“Last year we had 30 runners,” Grubbs said, “so this year we’re looking for 50. … We’d love to have 50,000, but we’re shootin’ for 50.”

Switchfoot is Rock the Park 2015’s headliner. Todd Blackledge, the ESPN college football analyst, will give an inspirational talk, and musical acts Capital Kings and LoveLikeViolence will perform. Rock the Park planners are hoping to reach 20,000 young people.

The 5K follows a smooth, flat, scenic trail through Metzger Park. It will begin at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 29. There will also be a two-mile walk, starting immediately after the start of the 5K.

Preregistration for the race and walk are taking place online through Aug. 22; costs are $25 for adults and $15 for children 12 and younger.

Costs to register after Aug. 22 – online and on race day at the park – will be $30 for adults and $20 for 12-year-olds and under. Registration on race day will open at 7:15 a.m.

There will be awards for the 5K’s top male and female runners overall, and for the top three male and female runners in each age group. There are eight age groups: 14 years old and under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70 and up. The 5K’s record time is 16:46. T-shirts will be available to those who preregister, and a limited number of shirts will be available Aug. 29.

Registration forms can be found online at www.briangrubbs.wix.com/rock-the-park-5k, or see links to the 5K at www.rockthepark.org and at Rock the Park’s Facebook page. Metzger Park is at 1420 S. Nickelplate Ave., Louisville.
